What’s happening at the NWT Art Centre Initiative?

Inside the plan to bring the first public visual arts centre to Northwest Territories As we move forward in our goal to build an art centre in the Northwest Territories, we and our community supporters had the pleasure of speaking with the Globe and Mail. Thank you Melaw Nakehk'o, Fred Sangris, and Sarah Swan for lending their voice to the cause, to Pat Kane for the amazing photos, and to Tavia Grant for writing about us. “It gives us pride for being in the North, of knowing what is being made, what people are doing and how far people are pushing things.” - Melaw Nakehk'o “This cold in the North is six months or more. It’s very difficult if you don’t have a support or a place where you can go. Where do you see this work? You see it spread on tables and craft sales. That’s fine. It gives these makers their income. The Kluane National Park Artist Residency provides an opportunity for established visual artists to pursue work that brings together science and art through connection with the spectacular landscape of Kluane National Park and Reserve in the southwest Yukon. During the residency artists will be expected to present: Three public workshops, talks, demonstrations, or events Two artist-at-work drop in sessions
Residency artists receive: $3000 CAD honorarium from the Yukon Arts Centre Accommodations and meals for two weeks in a cabin at the Kluane Lake Research Station (which is located 220 km northwest of Whitehorse, Yukon) And more!

Aejlies has created an art residency program dedicated for Canadian Arctic and Northern Indigenous peoples. The residency offers two to four weeks in Dearna (Tärnaby) and includes an artist fee, travel, accommodation, and access to workspaces. AIAAR is open to artists working in all disciplines and does not require the production of finished artwork. An important part of the residency is engagement with the local Sámi community through artistic exchange — such as talks, workshops, open processes, or other public-facing activities, co-developed with Aejlies.

If you’re a Northwest Territories artist, craftsperson or curator, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC) invites you to apply to display your art in the Mezzanine Art Gallery. Selected art will be featured in a six-month exhibition, from June to December 2027. Nominations are also welcome!

Calling Beaufort Delta artists to participate in the 37th GNAF in Inuvik, NWT from July 8-13, 2026. Their gallery will be open daily from 10AM-6PM - where a host of workshops, artist demonstrations, performances and panels will take place, with events celebrating different mediums each evening! The theme of this year’s festival is Gathering: gathering is how we share knowledge, memories, and time with one another; it’s how traditions are passed down, friendships are made, strengthened, and our sense of community grows.

Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories Maura Meng is an interdisciplinary artist whose ceramic work is both deliberately contemporary and authentically rustic. Each piece is shaped by curiosity, connection to the land, and a commitment to staying true to the moment in which it was created. Hands, often used as conduits for unseen forces in art, prayer and healing, reach from the beyond into our reality. Masks, usually worn to hide our feelings, are turned inside out, exposing the truth beneath.

Access Gallery, Vancouver, British Columbia Singing Water Stone illuminates a maternal lineage of Indigenous resistance and re-presencing from the furthest extents of colonial erasure. This constellation of images features original works by artist Siku Allooloo alongside archival enlargements from the historic newspaper founded by her late mother in the 1970s, building upon her legacy as a groundbreaking Taíno activist and journalist. Siku Allooloo (Inuk/Haitian/Taíno) is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist, writer, and filmmaker. Her poetic, sensorial work weaves the intimate and intangible with land-based practice and family archives to dismantle colonialism and re-presence ancestral trajectories.

Yellowknife Visitor Centre Gallery, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories The fourth iteration of Social Fabric brings together works by 15 NWT artists: Aileen Ling, Amber Baton, Erin Suliak, Hazel Wainwright, Heather MacKenzie, Laila Noksana, Marcus Jackson, Maura Meng, Melaw Nakehk’o, Pat Moore, Rosanna Strong, Sara Komarnisky, Shannon Crawley, Shawna Bassett, and Shona Barbour. The opening event will be held on March 5th from 6-8pm.
